Usually I'm content to let the art have its say about who I am. I'm sure whatever conclusions you the viewer make in response to the art contain an element of truth. However, for the purposes of this site, allow me to give you some hints.

I grew up near or on water and have sought it all my life. In contrast, I enjoy the geometry presented by pastoral scenes. I hate the work of gardening, however, I can appreciate the results (even Georgia O’Keefe said “I hate flowers-I paint them because they're cheaper than models and they don't move”). Light and its colors are magic. Wilderness is precious.

As to why I paint, I do it in order to have a deeper connection with my subjects. Taking a photograph (as I did for many years) didn't join me with them. Only through my hands can I describe what my subjects do to me. While, ultimately, this seems selfish, I display art in hopes that some will feel that my work has given voice to the same affections they have for similar scenes but were unable to put them into words.

ENDORSEMENTS

He has a wide variety of subjects, shows he's very versatile. I like the landscapes & boat paintings best; seems he's won a number of awards at the Evergreen for them. It is also unusual to see someone go back & forth between oil and watercolor, since they are such different animals. He also paints from miniature to quite large. Very nice work, in my humble opinion.

This is one of the best shows we’ve had at P&G.  Brian’s work is breathtaking with its vivid colors and broad strokes.  This show ends July 4th, so make sure to see it soon.
